The mythical North face of the Eiger is a dream for alpinists from all over the world. For the 5th time, it was also a playground for trail runners. Not without trouble because of the technical nature of the trails around the Swiss mountains.

Story of an exceptional race.

A meeting that became unmissable in the European summer

A particular relish revailed in the heart of Grindelwald this year, a few weeks after the tragic death of Ueli Steck, ambassador of the event. An atmosphere full of emotion but a mild weather awaited for the runners in the Swiss resort for the 13th stage of the Ultra-Trail® World Tour 2017.

The longest race, E101, is 101 km long and presents 6700m of elevation gain for a few hundreds of runners. Some very good runners are at the start of this 2017 edition with Jordi Gamito, Scott Hawker, Urs Jenzer the local and Thomas Evans, revelation of the last Marathon des Sables. For the women, the big favorite Andrea Huser, defending champion, finds on her way a good field after a tiring first American experience a few weeks ago at Western States Endurance Run.

The outcome of the race has soon been clear.

Before the 15th kilometer, Stephan Hugenschmidt was leading the race. The young 31-year-old German, with a race record already well-filled, and who represented his country at IAU World Championships in 2016, did not let the 1st place go and finished after a bit more than 11 hours of running. Behind him, the places of honour went to elite runners who did not disappoint!

The women race also quickly chose its champion. Andrea Huser confirms her ultra domination at home and wins in 13 hours and 46 minutes, 1 hour faster than Martina Trimmel, who does a fast 2nd half to finish 5 minutes before Helene Ogi. Denise Zimmerman, Marie McNaughton complete the top 5 of an international ranking dominated by home local runners. Special mention to Stephanie Case who was also at Western States a few weeks ago.

For all, the joy to finish

For the top athletes but also all the runners at the start of the race, one major objective: to finish. And 483 happy finishers did last weekend. Congratulations to all of them, they are now part of the very special club of UTWT finishers.

Full ranking of the race and UTWT available here.

For the best runners, next meeting is in Chamonix, for the big UTMB® week, where 3 races are now integrated to the UTWT series. First start on August, 30th for the TDS®, the CCC® and the emblematic UTMB® !
