Huge success at Ultra-Trail® Cape Town!

Cape Town, great place for the trail running

Last weekend, 200 runners were in Cape Town, South Africa to finish their UTWT season 2017 with style. Among them, amazing elite athletes were lining-up. During the week all of them could discover the city surrounded by mountains and beaches. The local Ryan Sandes acted as a guide for international elites to the best trails and to admire the scenic views in a great atmosphere.

On December 2nd, at 4 am, all the athletes started from Cape Town with the aim to complete the 100Km race, as quickly as possible. Ryan Sandes was the favorite for men and Andrea Huser, UTWT champion, for women. And the race reserved surprises and positive tension.

Kumalo for the second time; Bartholomew easily

UTCT have seen the same athletes led the race from the beginning to the end. Lucy Bartholomew (AUS), Robyn OWEN (RSA), Naomi BRAND (RSA) and Andrea HUSER (SWI) ran together in the first part of the race. Even if Lucy took a comfortable lead, the end was uncertain for the rest of the podium. Finally, Lucy Bartholomew won the 100Km with a new Course Record in front of 2 South African athletes. with more than 40 minutes on the 2nd, Robyn OWEN and 1 hour and 15 min on the 3rd, Naomi Brand.

  • Lucy BARTHOLOMEW (AUS) – (11h21min 49sec)
  • Robyn OWEN (RSA) – (12h06min 40sec) +44,51
  • Naomi BRAND (RSA) – (12h37min 14sec) +1h15min 25sec

Concerning the men race, a three-men race began between Ryan SANDES (RSA), Scotty HAWKER (NZE) and Prodigal KUMALO (RSA), the defending champion. During 60 Km, those three runners were separated by 5 minutes maximum. Prodigal KUMALO decided to speed up and increase the gap between him and SANDES and HAWKER. He used the same strategy than last year, and it paid off. As Lucy did, he set a new Course Record!

  • Prodigal KUMALO (RSA) – (9h51min 00sec)
  • Ryan SANDES (RSA) (9h56min 03sec) +5min 03s
  • Scotty HAWKER (RSA) – (14h04min 30sec) +13min27

Have a look on Scotty Hawker’s testimony about the UTCT 100Km race!

Finally, all the 119 finishers enjoyed the local beer, distributed after the finish line with the medals. Congratulations to all the athletes and the organisers for this successful edition. See you next year!
