The UTWT runners discover Ultra-Trail® Australia

The UTWT runners discover Ultra-Trail® Australia

The Ultra-Trail® World Tour is going towards Australia for the 9th race of the 2017 season. Another continent, another atmosphere, and another dream destination for the 1 444 participants of Ultra-Trail® Australia. At the heart of national park of Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, the competition promises to be exciting.

A new playground for the runners:

The athletes of Ultra-Trail® Australia will appreciate the sceneries of the race. Indeed, they will be surrounded by the dense forest and they will cross rocky tracks. In addition to this new environment, the rich wildlife and some koalas or kangaroos will accompany the runners through the natural park of Blue Mountains, site of UNESCO world heritage. Ultra-trail is open to all and each runner will have the pleasure of listening aboriginal songs on the start line. Ultra-Trail® Australia offers to the participants the specific culture of the region.

Ready for the revenge?

On the women side, the 2016 TOP3 is still present this year for Ultra-Trail® Australia. A simple challenge for Beth CARDELLI (AUS), first in 2016: to retain her title.

Kellie EMMERSON (AUS), 3rd last year at Ultra-Trail® Australia, comes on the race with full confidence thanks to her 4th place at Tarawera Ultramarathon. She knows the course and it feels like home for her on the race. She is a strong competitor for the victory.

Marie MCNAUGHTON (NZL) will try to show her good shape on the race. Despite her 6th place at Ultra-Trail® Australia last year, she is among the favorite thanks to her 3rd place at Vibram Hong Kong 100 Ultramarathon this year. Marie is progressing and she has a good chance to win the race on May 20th.

Lucy BARTHOLOMEW (AUS) is part of the new generation of athletes in Australia. Despite her youth (21 years old), she has already a high potentiel in the trail running. Lucy is well prepared for this race and she is capable of at least achieving podium position.

Furthermore, Sally MCRAE (USA) and Hanny ALLSTON (AUS) are the outsiders of the Ultra-Trail® Australia and will be interesting the day of the race.

Rob KRAR is back:

Since his victory at the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run in 2015, Rob KRAR (CAN) was out of the UTWT races. For his big comeback, he has chosen the Ultra-Trail® Australia! Two-time winner of the famous and legendary Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run in 2014 and 2015, Rob KRAR is impressive thanks to his record and could win this race in Australia.

He will have to face Sondre AMDAHL (NOR), 9th at the UTWT World Ranking. He too will be making a comeback on the Ultra-Trail® World Tour after his 9th place at Marathon des Sables last year. With a successful 2015 season, he arrives on the race with a big motivation to win.

Michael WARDIAN (USA), the man of 7 marathons in 7 days, will be also present at Ultra-Trail® Australia. 8th at Tarawera Ultramarathon and 31st at the UTWT World Ranking, Mike is a big competitor.

Tim TOLLEFSON (USA) has also big chances to win the race on Saturday. With a third place at UTMB® in 2016 and a 5th place at Vibram Hong Kong 100 Ultramarathon  this year, Tim can surprise his competitors in Australia.

Other competitors will also start the race and could hope for the title in Australia this year. Among them, the 6th and the 7th of Tarawera Ultramarathon this year, Andrius RAMONAS (LTU) and Matt FLAHERTY (USA). A beautiful race is expected in 2017.
