Transgrancanaria HG: meeting between the best athletes of Ultra-Trail® World Tour

On February 24th, Transgrancanaria will be the theater of a passionate competition gathering some of the best athletes of the UTWT. The titleholders of the race, Didrik Hermansen and Caroline Chaverot, will be part of this adventure and want to reproduce last year’s performance in Spain. Their contestants know what to expect!

An iconic race:

In Spain, Transgrancanaria HG is a race that makes runners dream. With 125 kilometers, the race crosses the Gran Canaria island from North to South. Roque Nublo and Pic de la Nievas are emblematic places that runners will appreciate during the effort. A beautiful race awaits us!

A champion and her outsiders:

Caroline Chaverot was the Ultra-Trail® World Tour “queen” last year. With three races for three victories on the Tour including the famous UTMB®, she realized the perfect season to earn the title of UTWT champion 2016.

But the big favorite should pay attention to the Swiss runner, Andrea Huser (4th woman of UTWT World Ranking), who wants her revenge on Caroline at Transgrancanaria. Indeed, she finished second on the race last year and will run for the win, just like Juliette Blanchet (7th at the UTWT World Ranking). The French woman is running Transgrancanaria HG for the first time.

Other athletes can surprise us on the race this year. Azara Garcia (Spain), Gemma Arenas (Spain) and Lisa Borzani (Italy) will be interesting to follow.

Didrik Hermansen

A tight competition on the men side:

The title holder, Didrik Hermansen, is one of the favorites of the race, which is usual for him. He has one goal in mind: the top of the Ultra-Trail® World Tour World Ranking. Indeed, Didrik Hermansen (3rd at the UTWT World Ranking) could pass Gediminas Grinius at the top if he wins Transgrancanaria HG.

But there is a lot of competitors on his course including the British, Andy Symonds. He has had a promising season last year by winning The North Face Lavaredo Ultra Trail and by finishing at the fifth place of Transgrancanaria. He could be a big danger for Didrik, like Pau Capell. Third at the 2016 UTWT Annual Ranking, he could make a sensational entrance in the top 10 of the World Ranking with a victory in Spain.

We should also not forget Antoine Guillon (4th at the UTWT World Ranking), Daniel Jung or Julien Chorier (9th at the UTWT World Ranking). Their goal is to start well the 2017 season.

How to follow the race?

838 runners will try to finish the 125-km long and 8 000-meter elevation gain race. First start is at 11PM (local time) on Friday, 24th February. A few useful links to follow the race:

The supports of UTWT:

For this 3rd race of the season, Ultra-Trail® World Tour, thanks to its elite support program, helps 4 talented athletes to take part: Caroline Chaverot, Juliette Blanchet, Timothy Olson, and Fabien Antolinos.

Good luck to all the runners!
