François D’Haene and Rory Bosio stay well ahead of competition at The North Face® Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc®
The North Face® Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc®
The North Face® Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc® has once again summoned thousands of trail runners from around the world. It marked the 9th stage of the Ultra-Trail® World Tour on 29th of August and took place in Chamonix, France.
Covering three countries (France, Italy & Switzerland), 168km in distance and 9600m of vertical gain, the UTMB® guides the participants through some of Europe’s most beautiful countryside and takes them on a journey, which goes beyond running. For many this race is the ultimate endurance challenge!
With an elite field stacked up to the maximum a fast race was to be expected. In the end, François D’Haene (FRA) took out the men’s competition in a time of 20:11:44 (course record), his 2nd win on the Ultra-Trail® World Tour. About halfway into the race he had dropped Iker Karrera Aranburu (ESP) and Tòfol Castaner Bernat (ESP) who eventually finished in a shared 2nd place 43min 58sec behind François.
In the women’s field, Rory Bosio (USA) repeated her victory from 2013, finishing in 23:23:20. Though it took her about 45 minutes more this year, she still finished a very solid 1h 31min 9sec in front of Núria Picas (ESP). French runner Nathalie Mauclair crossed the line in 3rd (25:47:35).
The UTWT® season will come to an end on La Réunion in October. With Núria Picas having won 3 stages of the Ultra-Trail® World Tour this year and Rory Bosio now putting pressure on her for the final ranking, it adds much excitement to the last race. For the men, Ryan Sandes is still in the lead but another strong performance at La Diagonale des Fous could give Francois D’Haene the chance to take over 1st at the end of the year.
