The spectacular scenery of the island of Madeira, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, will provide the setting for the official 2018 gathering of Trailrunning Team Vibram, which is involved in the 115 km and 85 km races. In conjunction with the event, there will be a screening of the short film Duality, a story of female ultra runners.

April 2018 – Maximum expectation for the Madeira Island Ultra-Trail, the demanding off-road race scheduled to take place on 28 April on the beautiful island of Madeira. Participants will include the athletes of Trailrunning Team Vibram, who are present in force.

Against the backdrop of the Portuguese island’s wild landscapes, the team is meeting for its traditional annual get-together, a time for sharing and exchanging views before the races begin.

A total of five Vibram athletes are taking part in the toughest race, the MIUT, an event included in the Ultra Trail World Tour circuit, for which Vibram is a technical partner. The course is 115 km long with a total height gain of 7,200 metres. At the starting line will be Lithuanian Gediminas Grinius, French runners Audrey Bassac and Juliette Blanchet, Javi Dominguez from the Basque country and the team’s new arrival, New Zealander Scott Hawker, in his first event alongside his fellow athletes in the yellow octagon’s team.
Representing Vibram in the 85 km event, with a height gain of 4,700 metres, are Russian-Italian Yulia Baykova and British athlete Carlton Rowlands.

Vibram - DUALITY

Both races are notoriously demanding in terms of both physical toughness and difficult terrain, with rocky trails, sharp and slippery volcanic rock, extremely steep climbs and technically challenging descents, sometimes on unstable ground. The ideal circumstances for testing the Vibram soles, which will provide the athletes with the latest technology from the firm with the yellow octagon: the Vibram Litebase solution, combined with the Vibram Megagrip compound, gives the perfect mix for optimum grip on difficult surfaces and wet ground, and with a weight reduction in the sole of up to 30% giving the same performance.

To mark the event, Vibram presents “Duality”, a film conceived and produced by Vibram and directed by Alessandro Beltrame, which will be screened at 18:00 on Tuesday 24 April at the Forum Machico in Madeira. In “Duality”, four women, four great ultra runners, tell the story of their lives, divided between everyday family and working time and mountain running. Two apparently contradictory facets – woman and athlete – which in practice depend on each other for their existence. Ordinary women who at a certain point in their lives decide to do something extraordinary, to follow a new route, devoting all their strength, determination and commitment to it.
The screening – the film’s première in Portugal and at an Ultra-Trail World Tour event – will be attended by Audrey Bassac, Juliette Blanchet and Yulia Baykova, as well as the two filmmakers Alessandro Beltrame and Klaus Dell’Orto.
