On the Gran Canaria Island – TGC Results
A super fast race and 2 vengeful winners!
Transgrancanaria HG 2016
The Ultra-Trail World Tour was celebrating its first stage in Europe last weekend. On the Gran Canaria island more precisely, where thousands of runners met for a very successful event in an idyllic place.
At 11PM local time on Friday 4th, around 1.000 runners were gathered at the start line in the small port town of Agaete (North of the island). The weather is good, faces are pretty relaxed although tension is growing as minutes fly. The start is given in a football stadium like atmosphere.
The elite startlist, always good at Transgrancanaria, was impressive this year and the result difficult to forecast. For the men, Aurélien Collet, the French, took the lead pretty soon during the race with a hell of a speed and did not leave his position until the few last kilometers.
Around the 100th km, Didrik Hermansen (Norway) and Gediminas Grinius (Lithuania) were out of the pursuers group to take the lead for a battle like in 2015.
The speed stayed impressive and the last part allowed Didrik Hermansen to fly to victory and to take his revenge from last year. His time 13:41:48, before Grinius (13:45:08) and the two Spanish men Pau Capell and Diego Pazos (14:11:02).
For the women the race was first marked by the withdrawal of Nuria Picas, big favorite, at the 34th km, for an injury that had bothered her since the start. Fighting with the Spanish runner, Caroline Chaverot (France) had no contestant good enough to disturb her good shape of the moment and to prevent her from flying to an impressive victory!!
She never left anything during a race she led from start to finish that she wins in 15:23:40, more than 2 hours before Andrea Huser (Switzerland) and Uxue Fraile (Spain), finishing in the TOP20 of a difficult race.
Caroline Chaverot seems to be in very good shape for the start of this season and will run the Madeira Island Ultra-Trail next month to try to make a double on the Ultra-Trail World Tour 2016.
Thanks to her 4th place this weekend Silvia Trigueros takes the lead of the Ultra-Trail World Tour general ranking. For the men, Gediminas Grinius, 3rd in Hong Kong, 2nd at Transgrancanaria, is leading the ranking over Pau Capell. The young Spanish, very ambitious, could be the surprise of the season. To be continued…
