Ultra-Trail® World Tour 2015 – Novelties & Race Preview

2nd Ultra-Trail® World Tour

  • 11 races, 5 continents, 150 world-class elites
  • 1 Ultra-Trail® World Tour 2015 champion title

On January 17th the first event of the Ultra-Trail® World Tour 2015 will kick off. This international circuit born in 2014 was first won by François d’Haene (FR) for the men and Núria Picas (ESP) for the women. Bringing together the biggest ultra-endurance races in the world it now launches its 2nd edition full of promises including 11 unmissable events between January and October.

The objectives of bringing together the biggest races from five continents, and to offer to all participants the chance to discover new territories by running, have already been reached with legendary competitions. They illustrate the diversity of Trail: steep Alpine roads, Californian trails, Hong Kong’s hills and beaches, Morocco’s desert …

The different terrains require a real capacity for adaptation from the participants. Indeed, each event is quite unique. The Marathon des Sables, the Tarawera Ultramarathon, Ultra-Trail® Mount Fuji and Western State 100 Mile Endurance Run, the UTMB®, the Vibram® Hong Kong 100 or the Eiger Ultra-Trail® … you have to have very different qualities to fight for victory or simply aspire to become “Finisher”.

Although fundamentally different, races of the Ultra-Trail® World Tour have common values that they are proud to share and promote. Ethics, sporting fairness, self-respect, respect for others and for the environment, and discovering territories. The Ultra-Trail® World Tour 2015 brings together all the superlatives to offer, to as many as possible, a competition including some of the most prestigious races on the globe and right in the heart of nature.

Novelties 2015

For this second edition there are 3 novelties

1) The introduction of a new category named “FUTURE”

To enter the Ultra-Trail® World Tour circuit, the events must meet five criteria (more info). To encourage and assist some races that do not fully meet the requirements of the 5 criteria a “FUTURE” category was created for the second year. The first selected race in this category is the “Madeira Island Ultra-Trail®”. The objective of this category is to improve the event in collaboration with UTWT and to integrate it into the tour within the coming 1-2 years.

2) A new race joins the UTWT

The Eiger Ultra-Trail®, with its 101 km and 6700 meters of ascent, is very technical and hard. It provides a special test in the mountains and will take place around one of the giants of the Alps, the Eiger, on the 18th and 19th of July 2015 in Grindelwald, Switzerland.

3) Five “SERIES” events

In 2014 there were 4, in 2015 there will be 5 “SERIES” events. The “SERIES” events make up an inner circuit strengthened by increased competition, which aims to facilitate the gathering of elites around the world by granting finishers a higher bonus in points for the final UTWT ranking. There will be no separate final ranking for “SERIES” events only.

The Vibram® Hong Kong 100 is an ultra endurance race that takes place in Hong Kong.  The 100km course starts in Pak Tam Chung on the Sai Kung Peninsula and covers some of the most beautiful scenery in Hong Kong, including remote and unspoilt beaches, ancient forests, nature trails, reservoirs and steep hills.  The course is based around Hong Kong’s famous Maclehose Trail, but with some diversions to ensure that runners spend more time in its most scenic sections, as well as finishing with the descent from Hong Kong’s highest peak (Tai Mo Shan).  The course involves a cumulative elevation gain of over 4500 meters and the cut-off time is 32 hours.

To assist and encourage the presence of elites at each event top athletes will receive support from the organizers and UTWT. This support is only distributed once per athlete per year to enable the largest possible number of supported runners and to create further competition.

The Vibram® Hong Kong 100 is offering bibs and accommodation while UTWT has taken charge of the air fares for the following 3 athletes:

Sondre Amdahl (NOR) – 804 ITRA XL points (6th 2014 UTWT ranking)

Dave James (USA) – 751 ITRA XL points (first UTWT season)

Francesca Canepa (ITA) – 748 ITRA XL points (4th 2014 UTWT ranking)
